Serena Williams Announces Retirement on Vogue Magazine Cover

Serena Williams will “relish these next few weeks” before officially calling in a career in professional tennis, per the 40-year-old’s Instagram. The 23-time Grand Slam champion appears on the September issue of Vogue, not in athletic apparel but in a flowing dress, next to a “farewell” headline:

“My goodness do I enjoy tennis,” wrote the 40-year-old, 23-time Grand Slam singles champion. “But now, the countdown has begun.”

There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction,” Serena writes. “That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks. ?”

While not confirmed by this post, it seems likely that Williams will end her career at the US Open, the site of her very first Grand Slam singles title win, in 1999.

We will have more to come on this developing story.
