Veteran champion Serena Williams adds one more to the count, advances into R64

Former world no. 1, Serena Williams ‘tales’ not done yet having only conceded only six games against Danka Kovinic

Serena Williams won her first-round match at the 2022 US Open in the evening session on Monday. The 40-year-old who’s playing the last tournament of her professional career at Flushing Meadows this year, defeated Danka Kovinic, 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 40 minutes.

Williams had entered the last Major of the year, and of her career, after having lost three of the last four matches she’d played. At Wimbledon – where she made her much-awaited comeback – and in Cincinnati, she lost in the first round.

In Toronto, she made it to the second round before closing out her career in the tournament.

As such, there were worries that something similar could transpire in New York as well.

However, Williams who had a perfect 20-0 record when it came to opening-round matches in the event going into the match, didn’t seem all too troubled. In the end, she finished with an improved 21-0 record. The first set saw a couple of exchange of breaks but it was the American who steadied the ship.

A third break on the Montenegrin’s serve in the eighth game of the set allowed Williams to serve it out in the following game. A break on Kovinic’s serve in the fifth game of the second set allowed Williams to make her way to victory not so long thereafter.

Williams finished the match with 23 winners, five more than Kovinic’s 18. Both players, however, had 25 unforced errors each. Overall, this was the 23-time Grand Slam’s 107th win at the US Open. Looking to win her 108th match and reach the third round for the first time since 2020, Serena Williams will play second seed, Anett Kontaveit. The Estonian posted a comfortable 6-3, 6-0 win against Romanian Jaqueline Cristian.
