Chelsea were denied an equaliser against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s strike in the early stages of the second period was ruled out for offside. And a new VAR graphic was displayed on BT Sport for the first time as viewers were shown exactly why the goal was chalked off.
Chelsea travelled to Dinamo Zagreb in the first Champions League clash of the season on Tuesday.
The Blues suffered a torrid night in Croatia and fell behind in the 13th minute when Mislav Orsic raced clear of the visiting defence before stabbing the ball beyond Kepa Arrizabalaga to put his side ahead.
Orsic was in inspired form in front of his home crowd and ran Chelsea ragged as he attempted to double his side’s advantage. And Zagreb frustrated the west London giants at the other end as they proved hard to break down.
Chelsea went into the interval behind but thought they had squared the match when Aubameyang steered Ben Chilwell’s cross into the back of the net. But the England wing-back had strayed offside in the lead-up to the goal.
Chelsea were slammed in the wake of their defeat and Tuchel will now be coming under increasing pressure to reverse his team’s slide. The German led the Blues to the Club World Cup and the FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals amid a tumultuous campaign last time out. But his side have started the new season in poor form.
The Blues have won just three of their first seven matches this season and have found the back of the net on just eight occasions. Last month they were thumped 3-0 by Leeds at Elland Road, before succumbing to Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. And they are already five points off top spot in the Premier League.
